Electricity Market Review
The electricity sector is one of the milestones of the energy sector of Georgia. It is a sector in expansion. Electricity generation - relying mostly on Hydro Power Plants - has been increasing over the years, although not always at a rate sufficient to match demand increase, driven by rising econom
ic activity, vehicle electrification, and increased blockchain mining activities. Developed in 2017, the Electricity Market Review analyses the main trends and key events in Georgia's electricity market. It also monitors the consequences of all the changes in the electricity sector, including market liberalization and the introduction of incentive schemes for renewable energy.

In May 2023, Georgian power plants generated 1,325 mln. kWh of electricity. This represents a 9% decrease in the total generation compared to the previous year (in May 2022, the total generation was 1,461 mln. kWh). The decrease in generation on a yearly basis comes from a fall of 9% in Hydro and 6% in wind power, while thermal power generation increased by 89%.

In April 2023, Georgian power plants generated 1,249 mln. kWh of electricity. This represents an 11% increase in the total generation compared to the previous year (in April 2022, the total generation was 1,125 mln. kWh). The increase in the generation on a yearly basis comes from an increase of 181%, 38%, and 5% in thermal, wind, and hydropower generation, respectively.

In March 2023, Georgian power plants generated 1,019 mln. kWh of electricity (Figure 1). This represents a 5% decrease in the total generation compared to the previous year (in March 2022, the total generation was 1,077 mln. kWh). The decrease in the generation on a yearly basis comes from a fall of 58% in thermal and 2% in wind power, while hydropower generation increased by 41%.

In February 2023, Georgian power plants generated 987 mln. kWh of electricity. This represents an 11% increase in the total generation compared to the previous year (in February 2022, the total generation was 890 mln. kWh).
